Kool & The Gang - Celebration
Kool & The Gang formed in 1964 as The Jazziacs in Jersey City, New Jersey. They started out primarily as an instrumental band, with the exception of such hits as
“Jungle Boogie” (Gold single) and “Hollywood Swinging” (Gold single), their only top 10 hits from 1969-77. In 1978, they added lead singer James “J.T.” Taylor. Their first record released in America w/
Taylor at the helm, was “Ladies Night” which peaked at #8 (Gold single) on Billboard’s Top 100, and “Too Hot” which peaked at #5 (Gold single) on Billboard’s Top 100. “Celebration” was released in 1980 off
their album entitled “Celebrate”. Both single and album went platinum. “Celebration” reached #1 on Billboard’s Top 100 on February 7, 1981 and stayed there for 2 weeks. Although never reaching the
top spot again in their illustrious career, Kool & The Gang went on to more chart success with an additional 7 Top 10 singles until 1987. “Celebration” has gone down as one of the most definitive
party/wedding songs of all-time.
